since December 2020
Across Kenya's most spectacular landscapes, Saruni Basecamp protects over 1.2 million acres, 1% of Kenya's landmass and 7% of its protected areas, through pioneering community-led conservation. These vital ecosystems provide critical habitats for endangered species while transforming tourism into a regenerative force that preserves indigenous heritage and empowers local communities through unforgettable wilderness experiences.
Saruni Basecamp was formed in 2021 through the merger of two pioneering companies: Basecamp Explorer (founded in 1998) and Saruni (founded in 2003). Since their inception, both entities have played a catalytic role in shaping Kenya’s tourism sector, championing a model that places community and conservation at its core. Today, Saruni Basecamp continues to contribute to a broader national transformation, one rooted in sustainability, inclusivity, and long-term impact. The company is chaired by Norwegian conservationist Svein Wilhelmsen, who brings decades of experience in Africa and a lifelong commitment to sustainable development. Your stay at Saruni Basecamp directly fuels indigenous-led conservation across Kenya's most precious wilderness areas. Each of the 13 eco-conscious camps channels vital revenue to over 6,000 indigenous landowners through groundbreaking models like Naboisho Conservancy. With 86% of staff from local Maasai and Samburu communities, authentic cultural exchanges through warrior academies and fireside stories become meaningful connections rather than performances. The Basecamp Maasai Brand empowers women artisans, preserving traditional craftsmanship, while 95% locally-sourced supplies and a remarkable 96% waste recycling rate complete a virtuous circle where conservation creates prosperity. Through Saruni Basecamp Academy, today's guests inspire tomorrow's conservation leaders, transforming tourism from mere experience into a regenerative force for both people and ecosystems.
